Housing
Too many Canadians are being forced to give up the dream of having a home they can afford.
You are being pushed out of your neighbourhoods, away from your family, your friends. People are even making the tough decision to put off growing their family because they can’t afford another bedroom.
To meet the moment, the NDP Government’s first step will be to set aside 100% of suitable federal crown land that we already own to build over 100,000 rent-controlled homes by 2035.
New Democrats will speed up construction and work further towards the goal of two million non-profit homes by:
Speeding up approvals on lands owned by the federal government to get workers on site, shovels in the ground, and homes built sooner;
Publicly finance new construction in partnership with non-profit developers, co-ops, and Indigenous communities;
Training more people including newcomers, and people displaced by Donald Trump’s trade war in skilled trades and improve working conditions;
Use Project Labour Agreements, or Community Benefits Agreements to support good jobs and improve the impacts for communities; and
Increasing the funding to acquire more public buildings and land to accelerate affordable home building.
Using 100% of this federal land for rent-controlled homes, New Democrats will develop mixed-use neighbourhoods with greenspace, active transportation, public transit, retail, and services that people need for complete communities.
An NDP Government will redesign and double the Public Land Acquisition Fund, investing $1 billion over 5 years into acquiring more public land to build more rent-controlled homes on.
No Tenants Left Behind
No one should lose their home because their landlord wants to double the rent. While corporate landlords drive up rents, we’re fighting to make sure you can stay in the community you love.
New Democrats will fight to protect renters by only providing access to federal housing dollars to provinces and cities that take real action to control rents and stop renovictions
Our national plan includes
implementing national rent control.
Banning fixed-term leases, renovictions, demovictions, and other landlord practices aimed at pushing people out of their homes and driving up rents.
Banning AI-driven price fixing on rents by landlords.
Recognizing the right of tenant unions to negotiate with landlords.
Ban corporations from buying existing affordable rental buildings.
Cut off handouts; including low-interest federal loans, preferential tax treatment and mortgage loan insurance for big corporate landlords who gouge their tenants
Boost the Rental Protection Fund to help non-profits purchase affordable apartments when they come onto the market.
