Universal Public Services

Healthcare

  • You shouldn’t have to choose between pain and a private clinic.

  • The NDP drove the largest expansion of Medicare in a generation—bringing dental care to millions and achieving the first meaningful steps toward universal pharmacare.

  • The NDP will stand up to Trump and stop the Americanization of our healthcare system.

  • We will strengthen and reinforce the Canada Health Act, putting an end to Cash-for-Care schemes that Americanize our Canadian public healthcare.

  • We’ll strongly enforce the Canada Health Act against Conservative Premiers like Danielle Smith who want to Americanize our Healthcare system.

  • We’ll make sure provinces bring in laws to go after the corporations who charge Canadians for the health care they need, making it a condition of health care funding.

New democrats will ensure that every Canadian has access to primary care.

  • To close the gap by 2030, the NDP will:  Increase transfers to provinces by 1% above current projected increases as an incentive.

  • Streamline the process for American doctors to come to Canada.

  • Fund 1,000 additional residency positions each year for qualified, internationally trained doctors already living in Canada.

  • Let doctors practice where they’re needed with a pan-Canadian licensure.

  • Train more doctors in northern and rural communities.

Hiring more Nurses

  • Today, our healthcare system is stretched to the limit. Nurses are being pushed past their breaking point. Families are waiting longer in emergency rooms. Communities are forced to do more with less.

  • New Democrats are standing with nurses, patients, and families. We’re ready to rebuild public health care by hiring nurses, fixing working conditions, and putting people before profits—because Canadians deserve better.

New Democrats will fix healthcare by hiring 35,000 nurses by 2030, improving working conditions, and ending the use of costly private agencies.

Our plan will:

  • Guarantee safe nurse-patient ratios across healthcare settings

  • Tie new federal health funding to real hiring and retention strategies

  • End the $1.5 billion drain to private nursing agencies and reinvest in public healthcare teams

  • Fast-track accreditation for internationally educated and U.S. nurses

  • Pay student nurses during clinical training and recognize the work of 780,000 nurses and PSWs with a $5,000 Canadian Healthcare Workers Tax Credit

Pharmacare for Canadians

In the first budget, the NDP will fight to launch universal pharmacare, securing free diabetes medication and birth control to every province and territory—expanding to cover essential medicines by year’s end.
